I am told that I should wear the retainer 18 to 20 hours a day for 6 to 9 months and then I can go to wearing it only at night. I have no problem wearing it at night, but I have such a hard time talking with it that I really do not like wearing it in the daytime. What would happen if I only wore it at night? And what are bands? About how many days does the discomfort last when you get braces? First of all I am not an orthodontist and do not take me literally. Bands are small rubber circlets around the front of each bracket to hold the wire in, they come in many colors. A band is also the rings that go around your molars. The maximum time for the days of discomfort of braces is about say...two or three days....four tops. I hope I helped ya! Then I took off all my girlfriends colored o-rings and we switched them. We both have all kinds of gold hooks sodered to the wire so we switched the wires too. I am haveing trouble fitting It in her mouth but It will work and I am having lots of fun doing it! Now when We go in to the ortho they won't know what to think. Now I have pink and she has blue. I have not figured out how to get the o rings back on yet. anyone know how or ever done this? He looked at my bottom teeth and suggested I get braces again for the bottom. I go on Friday (3/7) to get x-rays done. He will tell me then what exactly is going to be done. I was thinking of having braces, just wanted my upper teeth pushed back a bit. My orthodonist today said though that I need two teeth extracted. I really don't want to do this as I only have a slight overbite and want them pushed back just a little bit. Is teeth extraction always necessary?? I might try going private and see if there are other options with teeth extraction. If you have overbite you can see a cranial ostoepath - it really helps! Also if you have enough space the orthodontist can just move the teeth back instead of extracting them. lucy () - 22/Mar/2003 12:45:33 PM Meg- thanks so much for the help!! I really will look into that. My overbite isn't huge, but I have gaps between each tooth, which is why I couldn't understand why the orthodontist wanted to extract two teeth. I told him that I just wanted them pushed back a bit, as much as the gaps would allow, but it seems if I choose to go with them then extracting is my only option!! It just seems a bit drastic when there is no real need. From what I've heard, soon after you get used to your expanders, you will be able 2 talk normal again. I'm not really sure why it makes you talk funny, but I think it's because it's getting in the way of your tongue, by not giving you much room to talk. Hope this answered your question! Through the years doc was reluctant to remove teeth Mike now has tooth being push out being exposed its a front bottom tooth can see entire tooth and beginning of root on togue side of row of bottom teeth also root is sitting side ways now doc suggests periodontic evaluation. I have been worrying about having them out for so long! I had a sedetive thing before hand (I dont knwo if they do this normally but they knew i was nervous) it made me giggle lots and forgot what was about to happen. [To prove this the dentist asked me if i needed the loo just before i went in and i just laughed!] I was allowed to listen to my c.d player when i was in there so I had Avril Lavigne on loud so I couldnt hear what was going on. I closed my eyes and it seemed to be over in a min (infact it took 15!) I felt a small prick of one needle and alot of pressure in my mouth when they pulled the last one it. I felt no pain! To be honest though it really did ache the next day, I had to give in by the eyening and take some pain killers. This went on a few days but taking painkillers meant the pain totally went. I am still eating mashed potato and scrambled egg! This however is partly due to the brace they put in before I had my teeth out! Its all ok now. Monica i know exactly how you feel! Since my sister had braces all i could think abtou was how much i wnated nice teeth and how scared i was but not im not worried as its all ok. Everyone in my year also has or has had braces, im getting mine later than most people. Sorry its so long i just wanted to tell u about it! Good luck Monica let me know how u get on! =o) Kylie () - 25/Aug/2003 2:07:30 AM i used to be the biggest wimp when it came to the dentist. i had a bad experience when i was about 10 when i had to have a baby tooth pulled coz it was in the way... anyway, the lady who took it out was a bitch and was so rough it put me off.. however, i did start orthod treatment when i was 12, just the moulds, never got around to having the teeth out or braces on. i never went to the dentist for the next 9 years until i saw one of my friends who is 25 getting teeth out and braces on, so i figured that i should be brave enough to have it done being 21. anyway, here i am, 5 fillings, 8 teeth missing and 2 months into my braces treatment later, and it was the best thing i ever did!! so to all those scardies out there, it's not that bad, there isn't much pain, people don't laugh at you, so get the courage to go to the ortho or dentist and get those perfect teeth you have always dreamed of!!!
