Herbst Appliances
A splint with tubes and hinges to hold the mandible forward so it will grow and push the maxilla back so it won't grow. It's for kids that won't wear their headgears or to help headgears work better This message can be seen by all visitors to this site.

Archived comments: orthowiz (ortho24u@yahoo.com) - 09/Apr/2002 2:41:26 AM The Herbst appliance was designed for the correction of Class II malocclusions. The appliance repositions the mandible foward to allow for the adaptation in the muscular, skeletal and dentsl components. Dr. Pancherz had the orginal design developed back in the 1900's. I is not use to distalize molars due to patient non-coperation wearing their headgears. In fact an .045 tube can be placed today on the upper molars to aid in the retraction of an open bite whhile in Herbst treatment. sondra (sweetangel92120_@yahoo.com) - 24/Oct/2002 3:08:41 AM Hi um I wear the herbst appliace and I wanna know I there any way to sleep Without my mouth hurting in the morning. an when will it come off. I have tried to put lots of things on it but it still hurts. me (Karatechick05@catholicexchange.com) - 10/Feb/2003 5:22:40 AM I am getting a herbst in 2 weeks. it looks gross. I can already move my jaw forward whenever i like, but I can't eat like that because my molars don't touch. Somewhere else on the site it says that patients who cooperate "adapt" to the appliance. What does that mean? Do your bottom molars move up to touch your top molars or something? And can you wear a mouth gard with it? I have to wear a mouth gard because I spar and stuff in karate. How on earth can you eat with that thing on? Anybody who has had it or knows about my question PLEASE email me! () - 27/Feb/2003 9:10:19 PM I have one of these. Mom () - 09/Aug/2003 4:35:39 AM What happens when you sneeze with this thing on? My nine year old will be having one put on this school year. Does it hurts to be placed on? He has braces. They come off. But this looks horrible..............how does it really feel to get put on? How do they really feel after a couple months? Amanda () - 18/Aug/2003 4:09:40 AM Hey everyone, I'm getting my braces on tomorrow, and I've had my herbst for nearly a month. Most of the horror stories on this board seem exaggerated to me. First of all, mine was put in to move my lower jaw forward because it naturally rests too far back, I don't know what they are talking about at the top of this page. Anyway, I actually like the way my herbst makes me look. It moves the jaw forward and improves your outward appearance, and no one else can see it. For the first, I think, 3 days, it was weird to eat, and food gets stuck in strange places, but you get used to it and it's pretty easy to clean out. The only reason it is weird to eat is because your jaw is hitting in a different place than before. Anyway, your lower jaw will be a little sore, I noticed it after sleeping, mainly because I clench my teeth, and you may have a little discomfort from where the ends of the lower arms connect, but that can be taken care of with a little bit of wax. And no, you can't take the herbst appliance out of your mouth it is cemented in. The hardest thing to deal with is that, if you open your mouth too wide, which doesn't happen often, the arms may come apart. They aren't too difficult to put back together, it just may be a little painful to open your mouth that wide. It they get stuck open, I've noticed that it helps to puch on the back of the stuck arm with my tongue, that usually puts it back where it was. Although, and I'm not the athletic type, I don't think you can wear a mouth guard with it, you'd have to ask your orthodontist. Anyway, I know this has been long, but don't worry about the herbst. No one can see it, and it doesn't hurt at all after the first couple of days. ~Amanda Amanda () - 18/Aug/2003 4:13:54 AM Sorry, forgot one thing. Yes, you can move your mouth from side to side, although, no it really isn't cool. You just can't move it side to side as much, but to get a better range of motion, all you have to do is open your mouth a little wider. retainer fan () - 21/Aug/2003 1:37:48 AM What does this fix??? Chris () - 21/Aug/2003 5:38:39 AM Guys, I have the herbst, and braces. I got the herbst back right before thanksgiving. It was horrible for 3 days, then it just seemed to work. My teeth would be a little loose and shifted when I'd wake up, but my jaw (and bite) are fine now. It's not august, and I just got braces, which hurt pretty bad (only on the top). But the herst is not noticible at all form the oustide. Kissing isn't complicated. The version of the herbst I have is MUCH smaller, and eaiser. I did bust it open playing basketball once, but it was an easy fix. No worries guys, it's not bad stephy () - 07/Sep/2003 12:46:06 AM ok i have one question. is it like two tubes that kind of fits or slide in the other? hope you understandes my question and plz answer back! Herbst eneral () - 11/Sep/2003 3:17:21 AM Herbst General () - 11/Sep/2003 3:21:53 AM I have had a herbst for about 3 years and it isnt what most people say it does hurt sometimes it does get jammed open and my mouth always hurts when i wake up. I really wish i never went into the ortho office but i guess its all for the better.Iam going to have braces for 5 years and a head gear pro sometime during it, and they decided because im so "defiant" they would wire it in. I will hate those years as if i wasnt already stared at. Lol im really screwed now, then. lisa (blcerepak@optonline.net) - 12/Sep/2003 11:03:35 AM The herbst has been in for 3 days and it is a major pain. Can anyone tell me if it was worth having in? How long about till you can notice a difference? I can't imagine putting braces on my teeth too and that is supposed to be happening in 6 weeks. |
