These are made with ceramic or clear plastic, they are usually a lot more difficult to clean.

Hi, i've recently started my brace fitting. Ive the metal tracks on my bottom and a retainer thing on my top teeth, my ortho said that when my top ones are done enough by the retainer he opted for the clear brace. Why is it harder to clean these braces
Elaine (elaine222@aol.com) - 15/Sep/2002 11:32:42 PM

I have clear braces. The brackets are not harder to clean, it's the rubber bands that go around each bracket. They stain! I brush my teeth atleast 6 times a day and they still stain. Coffee, tea, wine, red sauces & colored drinks are really bad. I stop by my Ortho's office atleast once a week to have them changed (the bands). It only takes 5 minutes to have them changed but it's a pain. If anyone has any suggestions on how to remedy this, I am all ears : )
() - 28/Sep/2002 6:09:54 AM

yeah, stop drinking or eating the items you listed. and rinse with listerine
Val () - 15/Oct/2002 12:24:34 AM

i am going to tget the so called "ceramic braces". i play soccer, do u think they could break if i get hit????? and they stain?thats not good.
Val () - 15/Oct/2002 2:53:21 PM

i just called my ortho. she said that the only REALLY BAD thing to make them stain was like she said^ soda, coffee and teas. she said that if they break or chip its just an inconvienience and they would fix them for no charge. and u can get garders for them if u play sports.
() - 08/Nov/2002 7:40:52 PM

rubbish! It is no harder to keep cleatr brackets cleaner! They look a darn sight better than metal ones!
Brandi () - 09/Nov/2002 1:08:30 AM

does anyone know why these are so expensive compared to colored ones?
Alice Reeves (dolly_mop@hotmail.com) - 11/Nov/2002 8:08:08 PM

I have a few options about what to do with my teeth, a brace is one of them it sounds stupid but does it effect your life alot as in the way you eat. Are ceramic braces any harder to have then a metal brace. Also does it cost anymore on the NHS to get a ceramic braces.
(fionacallaghan@hotmail.com) - 12/Nov/2002 4:06:07 PM

Are there any major disadvantages of having clear braces and if they are so effective why would anyone still opt for traditional steel ones?
Charlotte () - 14/Nov/2002 11:32:21 AM

I've been told I need fixed braces, does anyone know if it's possible to get clear braces on the NHS, I don't fancy the old metal ones.
Rika (RikaCB@aol.com) - 16/Nov/2002 10:58:40 PM

what is the difference between fixed and removable braces? bye
Brandi () - 19/Nov/2002 7:27:39 PM

The difference betweeen fixed & removavle is you can remove one (to eat as with invisalign) & fixed you have to have on during your whole treatment process. I think fixed braces would be better because they're cheaper & I think some people might take out their aligners lose them or forget to put them on making their treatment longer, but they are truly the only CLEAR ones.
Beth () - 26/Nov/2002 11:43:27 PM

Hey, I have clear plastic braces, which we had to get fitted at a private orthodontist because the NHS woman wanted to break and re-set my jaw. I don't think the NHS fit clear braces. One of my friends has the metal braces and I'm much happier with the clear ones. Someone I speak to regularly didn't notice I had braces for at least 4 months. The bands do get stained really easily though. Going for a curry straight after your appointment is not a great idea as you end up with yellow bands until you get them replaced. :S
Shirley () - 28/Nov/2002 9:14:38 PM

Is it possible to have clear wires aswell as clear / ceramic fixings ? I am just starting to look at the options for braces and would like something as discreet as possible.
Kimberly () - 04/Dec/2002 11:27:15 AM

I have spoken with a few people regarding clear braces. They said what turns yellow is the bands, but if you get tooth color bands, they do not turn yellow. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks
(kbizz) - 04/Dec/2002 9:47:37 PM

I have clear on the top and the regular ones on the bottom. They are no harder to clean. As far as the staining goes i havent got any staining. hell yea , braces all the way, i also wear headgear and im wearing right now and i love it, i wear it to school, stores, anywhere
daisy (daisy_loves_egg@hotmail.com) - 11/Dec/2002 3:41:43 PM

I'm having clear braces on top and steel ones below, its costing me £2000 in all! Eek! But I want top know about this staining. Is it just tea, coffee and curries that stain them? I don't eat or drink any of that so will I be ok? daisy x
(joy5510@aol.com) - 14/Dec/2002 4:08:13 AM

clear ones here are 950 dollars top and bottom and im getting braces and if you have any info email me
() - 17/Dec/2002 4:33:57 PM

can you coloured bands on clear braces???
Ela (.....) - 22/Dec/2002 4:06:01 PM

My sister had these...they stain really fast. To be honest,I like the metal 1's better.
Kimberly () - 02/Jan/2003 2:55:02 PM

The plastic does not stain. It is the rubber bands, but they are changed about every three to four weeks. They stain from coffee, tea and red sauces. I have tooth color rubber bands and people still do not notice my braces. Plastic is definitely the way to go for adults.
Claudio (claudiofranck@softhome.net) - 04/Jan/2003 9:39:17 PM

I have clear braces and the only thing i hate about those is that the stains on the rubber ligatures are more easily noticed, and the get worse if you smoke (I do so....) and it sucks. Besides that I LOVE MY BRACES
() - 07/Jan/2003 11:02:53 AM

i had clear braces fitted yesterday, they look less niticable then i thoght, but did notice they are slightly bigger then the metal brackets
Mellisa () - 08/Jan/2003 3:26:19 AM

Im not sure wether to get clear braces or not does anyone know if they hurt more than regular ones Im so nervous so pllllllllleeeeeassssseeee! answer thanks p.s. Ela always be happy to have braces!
Claudio (claudiofranck@softhome.net) - 10/Jan/2003 4:51:23 AM

Clear braces are a little bit bigger than metal but they won“t hurt anymore than metal ones.
LaToya (MzTalkative88@Hotmail.com) - 12/Jan/2003 10:32:06 PM

I just found out from the dentist that I might need braces what are the best kind to get? I want Invisaline but I heard that they were expensive and if I can't get those I was thinking about the clear kind. What sould I get?
TC () - 14/Jan/2003 2:12:18 PM

I've just discovered that Batchelors Chicken Super Noodles also turn the bands yellow!! I've also had my clear fixed braces in for only six days and yesterday I noticed that the metal band had snapped!! Gotta go for a replacement tomorrow! I cant see how and why anyone likes these things their uncomfortable they cut your mouth my tongue has sores on it from rubbing on the metal I have wax but you cant eat with it in and I still have 18 months to go! Oh joy :(
Jane (jlucich@prodigy.net) - 18/Jan/2003 4:16:46 AM

I am an and I am getting some clear braces put on this month, Ive heard they stain like crazy - is there anything out there that cleans the stains off - or, am I looking towards 18 to 24 months of difficulty?
aShLeY (psychoassashley@aol.com) - 26/Jan/2003 11:43:37 PM

i had both metal and clear braces. because i had to get them on twice it sucked.but to tell u the truth i think metal worked better.cause the clear stained easily.and they even break easily.i played sports, and in basketball they break more easily, cause its a contact sport.
bobby () - 28/Jan/2003 3:22:09 AM

My wife is going to get braces for the 2nd time. I had them for 3 1/2 years and they were metal. I wish I had clear, a good friend had clear the same time I had mine and HE ATE ALL THE SAME FOOD AS I DID AND NEVER STAINED!!!!!
Kristy Riffell (KrisRiff@aol.com) - 29/Jan/2003 3:03:54 AM

To Whom it May Concern I am getting clear braces put on in a couple of days and I was wondering about the types of food that might stained the braces.
jen () - 29/Jan/2003 6:09:52 PM

hi..i'm just about to be 16 and i actually want a brace for straight teeth. i really want a clear fixed brace because i think they are less noticible.do u think my orthadontist will be able to fit me with a clear one or is it only specific places that supply them?
() - 02/Feb/2003 6:12:54 PM

U can now get white metal so that helps more to not see them. They are a light grey colour so u can't see them as much but I think only private have them at the moment.
() - 05/Feb/2003 4:20:13 PM

food dosnt stain the clear brackets its just the bands they put on that stain, they are clear but turn yellow, ive had mine on for a month now and im having them changed in 2 weeks, u dnt notice they have turned yellow, they really arnt noticeble wen they turn yellow... clear braces are much better...
Em () - 05/Feb/2003 6:13:27 PM

I am having clear or Porcelain on my bottom teeth and my top at a later date. When they are tighten does it hurt or feel like pushing on your teeth? Are they hard 2 clean? My dentist says I will be able 2 cope cleaning them but do u have 2 brush every braket? Thanks
Em () - 08/Feb/2003 1:06:35 PM

I don't know if you get them on the NHS or not. I am going private so can. If not then it is because it would be to expensive for the NHS and they don't like spending a lot on teeth. As when you are 18 you have to pay what ever you do so you might as well pay a bit more just so they aren't as clear for people to see.
() - 11/Feb/2003 5:27:00 PM

Wow, I just got my clear fixed braces on yesterday and this morning my teeth are killing me! How long will this uncomfortable pain last??
Petamore () - 12/Feb/2003 5:12:36 AM

I had my ceramic braces on 4 days back and it doesn't hurt too much. :) My friends hardly notice that they are on! But I do experience speeeeeech difficulty.
Em () - 12/Feb/2003 6:22:39 PM

I am having ceramic braces but need a front tooth out. Does it look ok with only 3 front teeth? I am really worried and the dentist say I can phone him with any questions but he always say they are pain free so thought 2 ask people there opinon. Anything about these braces will be a big help 2 me. Thanks
Petamore () - 13/Feb/2003 12:09:55 AM

Ern, I've never heard of ppl getting a front tooth out. Usually, dentists remove pre-molars but I reckon your dentist should know better. The extraction is pain free and the wound may hurt for a day but panadols will kill the pain. The definition of pain will depend on each individual's threshold for pain. I had 4 taken out at one shot and it's not that bad really.
Em () - 13/Feb/2003 6:11:26 PM

Thank Petamore. Thats has made feel a bit better only knowing I have to have 1 out but I am going 2 see him 2morrow so will ask. Thanks again.:-)
Lizzie Cheetham (lovin_liz_cheetham@hotmail.com) - 15/Feb/2003 7:23:21 PM

I had a metal track brace taken off a year a ago and my teeth still r not straight and i also have a clear retainner. When I looked at the retainer I noticed my teeth r not straight any way I hated having metal braces. Is it possible to have clear braces?
Em () - 16/Feb/2003 2:05:09 PM

yeah it is possible to have clear braces. I am next month. Look at the dentist that is going 2 straighten your teeth and see what he has done 2 other patients. Mine has done really well and I have asked a few people and they say they are really happy with what he has done 2 there teeth. But I am sure u could have the clear braces
Peppermint-patty (horne.turner@ntlworld.com) - 18/Feb/2003 6:59:51 PM

I have just had a white/ clear brace fitted. I'm 30 years old and have only had the top set done..to be honest I'm scared that it will make my teeth worse. It hurts at the moment I'm cleaning them about 4 times a day.How long will it be before I see signs of improvement? Please help, i'm not enjoying this. Cheers J
() - 20/Feb/2003 9:30:32 AM

i have clear braces, ive had them for about 6-7 weeks, and i can notice the difference already, epecially on my top teth, my bottom teeth are a bit crooked and will take longer but i have noticed a lil change in the bottom ones aswell, but the pain is all worth it once your teeth are straight!!
Petamore () - 20/Feb/2003 1:45:52 PM

peppermint, don't worry! I had mine for 2 weeks and I'm getting used to it. Only 2 weeks and I can feel the difference i.e. the teeth have moved! When the braces were put, I couldn't imagine living with it for 2 years! But just 2 weeks into it and I'm coping well plus I'm 27. Today, the metal brackets kept pricking into my ulcers like a needle. Just have to be focused on the end product and you'll bare with all these inconveniences. You are advised to brush after each meal but if you don't snack, you probably don't have to brush too often.
Em () - 20/Feb/2003 7:05:48 PM

I am having my claer braces next month. He said to give them at least 2 weeks to get used to them and they do make your mouth sore 4 a few weeks but then your mouth will harden up to the braces. A friend of mine who is in his late 30's has got a brace and he said he could notic the difference within 2 weeks. And my dentist says teeth more very quickly. Just a thought.
maya () - 20/Feb/2003 9:44:30 PM

in 2 months I"m having braces put on, I chose clear one, do you think it's a good idea.? Doesn't it hurt when they put them one? I'm a little bite nervous am I right to be?
Rainier R. () - 21/Feb/2003 6:28:30 AM

I hated having braces on in the beginning my teeth were sore everytime he tighted it... I didn't find my teeth to have less pain until year went by. Everyones pain will differ... Since I told my ortho I was moving out of state instead of having my braces on for 18 months I had it off within 12 months... He tighted my braces every 4 weeks but ending months before I left (3months) before leaving he tighted it every 3 weeks... I think he was moving to fast but I loved getting my braces off in one year plus I had straight teeth faster then other people who have theres on for couple of years!!! I dont understand how people have there's on for couple of years and not getting them off. Are they not visiting the ortho or is there process so long ?
Em () - 22/Feb/2003 9:59:32 AM

I am having the clear ones next month. They use some sort of glue to stick them on to your teeth so it shouldn't hurt. The nurse at my dentist has just had her braces off and say it feels like pressure on your teeth when you have them tighten. She said push o your gums and that is what it will sort of feel like when he tightens them. I am nearvous to but more about having my tooth out than the actual brace.
curt (cl06@yahoo.com) - 10/Mar/2003 9:53:48 PM

does anyone know cost of the the clear fixed braces?
Riley () - 10/Mar/2003 11:41:59 PM

My ortho says metal, gold and clear are all the same price. We are paying $4,000, but I'm also getting a bite plate I think that costs more.
em () - 11/Mar/2003 6:12:04 PM

I don't know if u are in america or the uk? But mine in the uk are costing £1600 and thats 4 everything. But thats only 4 my bottom teeth 4 a year. I don't know about my top set but I know it won't be a year so should be cheaper. Hope that helps.:-)
Em () - 19/Mar/2003 6:47:51 PM

I have had my braces fitted. They just feel very odd. Not painful or sore. But go 4 it as at the end u will have great straight teeth and will be smiling all the time 2 show them off. Also if u are self consous of your teeth it is only a year of having braces but a life time of nice straight teeth. Well that my point of veiw
Severed () - 19/Mar/2003 8:18:58 PM

Yeah, get it over with. And in the end, be sure to wear your retainer(s) or it's definitely not worth it. I surely regret not wearing them
Chelsea () - 22/Mar/2003 7:36:50 PM

I'm not sure what kind of braces I should get. There's so many different types! I'm twelve, and if I were to choose clear braces, would I be old enough to get them?
Chelsea () - 22/Mar/2003 7:43:53 PM

I also wanted to know if soft drinks could stain clear braces much. If they do, would that mean that I would have to cut down on them, or just brush more often? 'Cause I drink a lot of pop!
Severed () - 23/Mar/2003 12:30:21 AM

Yes, dark colored soft drinks could stain clear braces.... Also, since you are twelve, talk to your parents and tell them you want clear braces, they could be more expensive, that's why you should talk to them... It also depends on what your orthodontist has. I had regular metal braces when I had braces but that's just me because I like the metal look, I wasn't ashamed to have them show, and they were the cheapest for my parents when I was younger.
() - 26/Mar/2003 8:52:15 PM

im ment to be having metal braces fitted soon but think i would like clear ones better as im nearly 18. how much do they cost?
D () - 27/Mar/2003 11:40:49 AM

I am getting (hopefully) a clear brace at the end of the month, i was told it is costing 2000pounds......... Is this right or am i being ripped off
Em () - 27/Mar/2003 6:11:51 PM

I am have got ceramic braces and they are costing £1600 4 everything. But it depends on each dentist how much they want 2 charge.
() - 28/Mar/2003 6:34:33 PM

prices range from 1500 to 2000 or evan more, mine are costing 1800 but its all worth it, becuz its not ,like u hafta pay all at once u pay a bit everytime you go, i pay 100 each time i go bk.but does depend on the ortho and how good they are.
jus me (tingrin :D) - 31/Mar/2003 3:05:15 AM

honestly! clear would be no fun. no colors? i like the metal ones better :D :#
kristyn (skittle_gurl85@hotmail.com) - 31/Mar/2003 8:31:27 PM

Hi everyone, I live in Canada and i have the clear ceramic braces. i have had them for almost a year and no stains at all. easy to clean, just brush my teeth twice a day. i don't have any elastics to hold the wire in, i have these tie wires, which are metal but you can't see them. as for the wire, it is metal as you can't get anyother wire that is durable enough. for price wise, there is no difference from my ortho. the metal were the same price and clear. i went with the clear b/c i am graduating this year. the total cost of the braces is $4475 cdn funds. any questions jsut email me i will be glad to answer any questions u may have
Kylie () - 01/Apr/2003 1:59:01 AM

i'm going to be getting braces soon, on both top and bottom. i have currently opted for clear on top, and gold on bottom. however, i'm having doubts about the clear ones, as to what they would look like when people look at you... do they make your teeth seem odd coloured, or do they really blend in with your normal teeth and you can hardly notice they are there. sometimes i think maybe it would just be better to have either silver or gold on top, coz if i'm going to have braces i should show them off.... i'm nearly 22 and deal with customers on a daily basis and would be self-concious of people making comments. please, tell me what thoughts you had when making the decision to have clear over silver!!
() - 01/Apr/2003 10:45:50 AM

claer and gols would look stupid and they dont put clear on the top and bottom, only the top. they are less visible then metal ones but the elastics stain very easily and go yellow so u can notice them, and the clear ones are more bulky looking than the metal ones.
Em () - 01/Apr/2003 6:31:49 PM

There is new white wire. i have got it. My dentist is lucky enough 2 be one that is testing it. it is more a pale grey than white. When I came out. my dad thought I hadn't had them on becaue of the wire and ceramic brackets.
Em () - 01/Apr/2003 6:38:15 PM

opps. I have the ceramic as u know and it looks like I have 2 rows of teeth but u can't really see them. The metal people look at u because they are really clear 2 see. But the clear if people glance at u don't see them. The only problem is the clear u can't see the plauque building up roung your brace as with the metal u can.
Kylie () - 01/Apr/2003 8:08:22 PM

Thanks Em, yeah, i think i will stick with the clear on the top. i think it would look better than being a complete metal mouth for 2 years, considering i deal with customers for a few hours each day. if anyone else has more stories about their clear braces, please post a message!
Christy () - 05/Apr/2003 8:14:34 AM

I'm getting ceramic braces this tuesday and are the bands REALLY going to stain? My ortho said i could get colored bands so will it still stain then?? It's odd when I heard that most of you are saying that it'll stain when you eat certain foods or drinks but with colored bands too?? Oddness.. Help!
Em () - 05/Apr/2003 7:08:36 PM

I don't know about the bands. As I have only got the braces not the bands over them. Just be careful with ceramic as I have got them and U can't eat anything red as it stains them 4 a while. No red wine, tomato soup or spicy things. But if u work round those foods u will be ok.
Christy () - 08/Apr/2003 6:27:49 AM

I just go my ceramic braces fitted today! oh wow, it was great, just a slight pressure but all good.. i love my braces! but no colors yet though, i have to get this basic silver wires.. and an anchor to pull my molars next week.. ouch! i can't wear metal anyway since i'm allergic to metal..
Rika () - 13/Apr/2003 11:13:53 PM

A friend of mine has these except she has the colored donut bands. I opted for the regular metal kind though. :)
() - 14/Apr/2003 4:16:30 AM

I just got braces almost 4 months ago. I am 27 years old. I got the ceramic on top and the steel on the bottom. My question is: is it normal for your teeth to hurt intermittently between ortho visits? The first week I get them tightened, they hurt like the dickens, then they're fine for a couple of weeks, then usually the week before I'm due for another tightening, one tooth (any tooth, it doesn't seem specific to any region) will hurt as if I just got it tightened. Is that normal? Thanks.
Em () - 15/Apr/2003 6:30:09 PM

I had my tighted 2 weeks ago and had them fitted 2 weeks before but I have 1 tooth at the moment that is aching. So I am not sure if it normal? But I have the same problem.
Petamore () - 16/Apr/2003 2:40:25 PM

I'm 27 too and I have clear braces top and bottom. It's meant to hurt a lot after each tightening. Tightenings are required each month to move our anchored teeth. The donut bands I have look "clear" for 2 weeks before they begin to stain "yellow". As long as you drink coffee, tea, eat curry etc, they'll stain but you'll get a new set during your next dental visit. No worries. It's the bands that stain, not the ceramics, As a matter of fact, what's the point of getting clear braces but use coloured bands instead of clear ones? We wear "clear" braces because we do not want them to be too visible.
Petamore () - 16/Apr/2003 2:47:30 PM

By the way, I have the same experience too. As in some teeth will hurt now and then. My dentist told me that the nickel titanium wire has a memory. Maybe some teeth hurts only when the wire has moved them? Probably have to ask the dentist why is that the case during our next visit. Or maybe you could have bitten something hard causing it to be sore for a few days?
Em () - 16/Apr/2003 6:16:39 PM

I never bite on my front teeth since I have had my braces fitted and I do by accident it hurts like mad so thry 2 make sure I don't do it agian. I never have problems with my tightening. never really feel anything apart from the tugging. Really neavous about next time though as I have got 2 have a tooth out at the front and I am sure he will do them extra tight 2 make them move quicker.
Christy () - 17/Apr/2003 3:59:22 AM

does this mean i can NEVER bite on my front teeth??! god it hurts like hell and i can't seem to eat anything except damn noodles and soups and aaaaargh, i only have braces on for 3 days and i'm already freaking out.. help me please..do i really need painkillers? my ortho says nuh-uh.. =(
Em () - 17/Apr/2003 6:29:24 PM

U will be able 2 eat on your front once they have settled down. After 3day of having then they are moving so thats why it hurts so much. Give it a week or 2 and u might be able 2 eat on them. If not just brake your food up and eat on your back teeth thats what I do and can eat nearly anything now.
Rika () - 17/Apr/2003 8:00:23 PM

i can bite down on my front teeth but i chose not to cuz im scared of my brackets falling off cuz i have had tham break n the back but not n the front and i dont wanna start now so yeah....plus food will get into ur braces easier
() - 17/Apr/2003 11:02:18 PM

it dosnt hurt forevr, when u get them tightend , for bout 2-3 days they hurt, but everyone is different and everyone has different treatment, not all pain is the same!! but all it is your teeth moving, and that means ur brace is wrking! mine have straighen soo much in jus 4 months, im glad i have them and im able to pay for private treatment, im nearly 18 and i have been on the NHS waiting list since i was about 9 years old, so in the end i had to go private wich i wanted 2 anyway, NHS are out for one thing and that is get there money and give crap treatment.. if i ahdnt of gone private then when i turn 18 they would of said nop u cant have it done ur too old for free treatment, and also i would have waiting another mayb 2-3 years for my brace!! but coz i went private i waited a week adn got an apointment for treatment 2 start in a month from then.. barce are a pain after a while but u also get used to them.. at first i couldnt eat certain food but now i can eat mostly anything... but the clear ones wich i have the bands stain loads!! anyway iv etalked 22222 much!! bye
Em () - 21/Apr/2003 6:15:12 PM

No u can't have free braces while u are pregnant. Other wise everyone over 18 would be getting pregnant 4 that reason. U can only have them up 2 the age of 18. After that u have 2 pay private. U can get free dental check ups while u are pregnant though.
Rika () - 22/Apr/2003 3:35:39 AM

what does NHS mean? id that sum sort of european thang? what does private mean? if i am right bout this being a european thang then let me tell u that in the u.s u gotta pay 4 braces no matter how old u r. insurance will cover sum but not all of the cost.
Em () - 22/Apr/2003 6:16:15 PM

NHS is english 4 the National Health Service. And private is where u have 2 pay.
(marianne.sullivan@abgenix.com) - 28/Apr/2003 9:39:10 PM

Will coffee and/or soda stain my braces?
() - 29/Apr/2003 5:53:49 PM

Has any one had any experience with clear fixed braces? are they as unreliable as the denists seem to make out? I'm tinking about this as an optin buthave been advised against by my own dentist, and they are also more expensive, so i want to know that i am making the right decision when i do
Em () - 29/Apr/2003 6:20:55 PM

I don't have clear but the ceramic ones and am fine with it. It was my idea so my dentist just referred me 2 the ortho I wanted 2 go 2. I wanted invisalign but he said I couldn't have them and said these where the best and invisalign is rubbish anyway. The only problem he told me about these is that plaque builds up and u can't see it so have 2 brush why well. But I am sure if u don't he will tell u your not.
unclebug () - 04/May/2003 8:06:43 PM

i wear clear brackets and have no problem cleaning them. it's the clear ligatures to worry about.
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 11/May/2003 5:53:59 PM

Hey everyone!! I just wanted to know, whats the difference between ceramic braces and clear braces. Also, do you have to get your wisdom teeth removed in order to get braces? thanks a bunch!
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 11/May/2003 5:57:44 PM

Hey again. i also wanted to know how much ceramic and clear braces usually cost, and which one is more expensive.
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 13/May/2003 6:47:21 PM

Hey. I just wanted to know why you have to sign up for that NHS thing, and what is it for? Is it insurance? also, where do you go to sign up for it??
Em () - 14/May/2003 6:07:05 PM

NHS is English for the National Health Service so u can't sign up 4 it. If u are under 18 u get it free in England. It's not a world wide thing.
auskippy () - 26/May/2003 7:33:18 PM

EM you seem to be very knowledgable about the clear vs ceramic braces debate. I am considering getting braces, my ortho says clear or ceramic on top and metal on the bottom. What would the reason be for metal on the bottom?? I am so scared of getting braces in general, especially after reading about the sores and ulcers etc that a load of people posting here seem to get. I will be 30 this year and wonder if I really need to do this.....
Em () - 26/May/2003 7:48:11 PM

U don't have 2 do it. It's up 2 u. I have got mine because I got so fed up of the way my teeth looked. Ulcers aren't bad. I haven't had one till this week with my braces but that was only because I kept bitting my lip by accident. It depends on how u talk? I talk and u see my top teeth more. So it wouldn't matter if I had metal on the bottom. Just I want ceramic on both and my orthodentist didn't argue. U will get bored of them. I have. But the end result should be great if u stick with it. They aren't as bad as people on here say. Just have to be careful eating hard and sticky foods. Also with ceramic braces no red or spicey food as it stains each elastic band on the brackets. I found that out last week. Didn't mean to though. Other than that u get used to them. i have had mine over 2 months now and even the thought of having them off feels weird to me.
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 04/Jun/2003 5:52:25 PM

hey EM, you seem to know alot about braces. did you ever have to wear spacers? well if you did, how long do you have to wear them for? my friend has braces now and she had to wear her spacers for about a year and a half. Thats crazy, i would never want to wait that long!!
Em () - 04/Jun/2003 6:34:16 PM

Don't know what spacers are? I just went to see my orthodentist after my normal dentist refered me. We just talked and he told me what he was going to do, what teeth I needed out, price and treatment time. I went back a month later and he fitted me the front bottom brackets as I wasn't sure If I could cope with them. I did so went back 2 weeks later and he added the wire, then I have my tooth out and last time he added my back brackets. Thats all in 2 months of having the front brackets on. They have moved so much as I took pictures with my digital camera. And after these have been on 6 months I will have my top brackets fitted so they come off together and a permanent retainer fitted. So to me I can't see why u can't have braces stright away but they do know best as they have trained 4 years
Saz (xxbadchickxx9103@hotmail.com) - 15/Jun/2003 4:52:44 PM

Hey pplz I've been told i'm getting my fixed brace in august and i dont no weather i can have clear ones or not does anyone no if i can? i havent asked my ortho yet. i really want clear 1's tho. are they a lot more difficult 2 clean? plz let me no!!
Em () - 15/Jun/2003 5:53:46 PM

Well when you next see him ask for the clear. Don't ask him on the day as he will have everthing ready and he is using the metal you will be messing him around. They aren't harder to clean just with the metal ones you can see the plaque building up around your braces and can clean it off. With the clear/ceramic you can't see it as it matchs the brackets so you have to clean very carefully and go over them maybe twice to make sure you missed none of the sides.
Zoe () - 15/Jun/2003 10:48:39 PM

Im going to the orthodontist for the first time on thursday 19th. I am 15 and most of my friends have already had braces or they r coming off soon. My dentist was so slow @ refering me, i dont wanna b the only one with braces! What happens the first time u go? Im really worried as i h8 the dentist! I think i need teeth out too, does that hurt? I h8 needles! plz reply!
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 15/Jun/2003 11:16:10 PM

yeah i know how you feel. All my friends had or is having their braces off now. I am almost 16 and i don't have braces either. I am getting them towards the end of the year. I also hate the dentist and needles. I've been to the ortho once b4 for an examination, and he told me that i had to have 4 teeth removed. i was sooo scared!! Then I told my dentist about it and she said that when you get those teeth removed, you get them removed all at once. Then i was like wwwhhooaaa!! wouldn't that be really painful?!? then she said not really. Because she told me that they put this gel around your tooth area on ur gums and then they give you a shot, so the shot won't hurt. then you don't feel a thing when they remove the tooth. but after a while when the shot medicine wears off, it'll be sore for a couple days. After that i wasn't that worried anymore. I can deal with the pain for a couple days. But it is all worth it for straight teeth! :)
Zoe () - 15/Jun/2003 11:35:53 PM

Thanx 4 that Trisha, im glad im not the only one getting braces later on. I wish everything would hurry up though, i have been wating to go to the ortho for a year now! Im gunna have a fun week thi week...not! I have the ormal dentist tuesday and the orthodontist thursday! oh what fun!
Em () - 10/Jul/2003 6:14:29 PM

A year! It took me a month to get a appointment then I had them fitted within the next month. Guess I was lucky but then again I have gone private so I think they do what u want.
Echo (echo@everlasting-echo.net) - 10/Jul/2003 7:02:19 PM

About getting teeth out- people tell me various things. My ortho said I might need 4 teeth out, but he is going to try something called "slenderizing" first where he makes the teeth smaller or something. Ask about that. And the gel they put on to numb your gums before they put the shots on- Hah. Hardly does anything. It still hurts like a b. Those shots are not fun.. at all. I'd rather go through just having my teeth pulled without them!
brace_face () - 11/Jul/2003 4:30:04 PM

im wearing crystal braces for 4 days now...i just wanna sa that my when i first put on my braces , it wwasnt really painful...just for 2/3 days....is that good or bad ??? now it doesnt hurt but it does hurt when i chew.....can sumone pls reply me ??thx !!
Em () - 11/Jul/2003 6:14:47 PM

I had my braces tightened 2 days ago and he has added some odd metal springs to some of my brackets and wow they hurt. I can't chew on the teeth with them on so no u aren't alone I am sticking to soft food if I can. But it went last month but takes time and a lot of dental painkillers.
brace_face () - 12/Jul/2003 3:58:33 PM

thx sooo much em !!!!! anyway , i heard that when u take out ur crystal braces it will hurt a lot bcoz da braces is really attached 2 ur teeth...iz dat true ??
() - 13/Jul/2003 6:24:23 PM

treatment won't hurt though it might ache for a while after
brace_face () - 14/Jul/2003 11:11:38 AM

ok...sorry em bcoz im asking loadz of questionz ;) ...... but im only 13 n i jus wanna know more about it....neway , sum dentists sayz dat if u wear crystal braces , the treatment will b longer compared 2 da normal metal braces ..... iz dat true ??? n they said dat the crystal braces isnt as effective as the normal ones....is dat true ???
Em () - 14/Jul/2003 6:20:18 PM

Not at all. They take the same. It's the invisalign that takes longer and doesn't have as good a result. I have ceramic but I have got so many springs on I should of had metal. But the springs should come of next month. As 4 getting food stuck. I don't know. I don't eat out that often and when I do I try and get the food out with my tounge.
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 14/Jul/2003 7:47:31 PM

Hey Zoe! I was just wondering on how you were doing, and if you got ur braces yet. I never got mines yet. My dad said in 2 months. i hate waiting i just wanna get it all over with. i am just afraid about the dentist part...not the ortho. It's b/c i have to have 4 teeth pulled! does anyone think that i could possibly get those 4 permanent pulled without any shots??
Tina () - 14/Jul/2003 10:17:14 PM

ive had mine taken off then put back on but when you get them removed it leaves this black color on your teeth and yes they are cemented to your teeth and they dentist would use this freaky rubber thing that rubs really really hard on the tooth to get the black stuff off and the taste is awful!
Tina () - 14/Jul/2003 10:20:31 PM

also wanna add that clear braces are kinda like and eraser for minor mistakes only but if you have really crocked teeth then they will put on the metal or ceramic that show up really good but its not all that bad almost every one has braces so i guess its just go with the flow
Em () - 15/Jul/2003 6:33:04 PM

Ceramic is like clear. Just made of different stuff ut does the same job.
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 16/Jul/2003 5:25:16 PM

Hey everyone...i have to get 4 teeth pulled b4 i get braces. I heard how shots are the most awful part of it all. Does anyone think that it would be possible to get those teeth pulled without shots?? thanks!
Em () - 16/Jul/2003 6:13:13 PM

Shots? U mean the injections to num your gum? I'm not sure if they would do that these days but I would be a lot more painful that way. Just grit your teeth. I did and am happy I managed to do it as I hate needles. It don't hurt that much. Giving blood is more painful.
Lisa-Luvz-Chris () - 16/Jul/2003 7:47:21 PM

I need to get fixed braces and i am really upset about it because i think people will see me different and my boyfriend will dump me , but i no it will do me tyhe best in the longrun and i can smile with a gorgeous smile to every1 that needs them , go for it u will look stunning when u get them off !!!!!!
Em () - 17/Jul/2003 7:07:09 PM

Yeah stunning teeth but it's hard work. I have had them 4 months and it feels like they are coming off soon then I realise I have another 8 months and more brackets to go yet. The joy.
Xander (carlosmtz0@hotmail.com) - 21/Jul/2003 2:54:49 AM

I have had my clear braces for about two weeks and it has been a breeze the first five days are HELL though, I love them, I can go the whole day without someone noticing them. I brush my teeth after every meal, and dont snack at all. I stay away from Ketchup, Mustard, Dark sodas( I only drink sprite and sprite remix) and I steer clear of all the sauces that are red :) but I am gonna get a bite plate soon cause I'm gonna get my bottom ones on in 2 months. but I love my CLEAR BRACKETS
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 21/Jul/2003 7:31:44 AM

I hope that i get clear braces. But it'll be hard for me to brush them after every singe meal, because i will be having school soon. I also LOVE foods that have ketchup and other sauces. Like pizza, chili, & spagetti. Do you really have to avoid those types of foods? that would really suck because it'll feel like i will be starving myself! Would it be possible if i could chew any types of gum to get that stuff to not stain?....or maybe like drink lots of water?? thats what i hate about clear braces. Thanks a bunch! :]
Em () - 21/Jul/2003 6:56:25 PM

Yeah u have to avoid that sort of food as it stains your bands. I am lucky I have got white metal instead so no stains 4 me. Try bicarbonate of soda 2 get the stains of the bands if u get any. I only brush after breakfast and last thing at night and my orthodontist says my teeth are great just make sure u don't miss behind any brackets.
Zoe () - 22/Jul/2003 5:25:31 PM

Hello Trisha! Im getting my seperaters put on in abotu a week then i im getting the bit of ur brace that goes on the roof of ur mouth..what ever that is called about a week after. I need 4 teeth out after that then i will b getting my fixed braces! Thanx 4 thinking of me, how u getting on?
brace_gurl () - 23/Jul/2003 11:36:06 AM

hey ,i jus wanna say dat all those red sauces e.g = spaghetti sauce , tomato sauce , etc doesnt stain my braces at all !!!! but after eating curry , it sorta got stained .... :( can any 1 pls tell me wat other food i cant eat coz my frendz said my yellow rubber bandz dat got stained r kinda obvious......n i dont want it 2 happen again !!!!
Trisha (bAbYgUrL87053@cs.com) - 24/Jul/2003 3:18:11 PM

Hey Zoe! Wow you really sound like your moving right along with those braces. I have to get 4 teeth removed as well. I am afraid of that part. You better tell me how that goes. But i will hopefully start doing stuff next month for braces. I'll let ya know when i start to. When you actually get your braces fitted, tell me everything that happens. I need to know what to expect when i get mines. Well thanks for thinkin of me too! Keep in touch. ~LuV tRiShA~
Em () - 24/Jul/2003 6:42:12 PM

Ask your orthodontist if he does white wire? It's new so not everwhere has it but it's good because it don't stain. Chicken soups not good. Thats yellow and my bands went that colour 2. Can't u go inbetween your tightenings just 2 change your bands? When mine stained I just phoned and thye fitted me in at the end of the day.
Nadine () - 25/Jul/2003 7:12:21 AM

Hi I'm going to my consultation on the 4th of August. What should I excpect. What's the usual price in the USA.
ciara_03 () - 25/Jul/2003 10:57:23 AM

hi, i have a gap in between my top 2 front teeth, i am considering braces, do u think its worth it? if i get braces i only want these or a reatiner do u think it will work?! please help!
Em () - 25/Jul/2003 6:22:28 PM

Oh course it will work. How do they take teeth out and straighten them? They don't leave u with a gap were the tooth was. U go 4 it if u want it.
alexis () - 26/Jul/2003 1:14:27 AM

hi, i have a question about clear fixed braces. First of all, how much more does one have to pay for them and can you choose if you want ceramic or plastic...because i think plastic would be safer wouldn't it?
Em () - 26/Jul/2003 6:11:25 PM

why would plastic be safer? I have ceramic and there isn't anything dangerous about them. The wire is more dangerous. Where are u from? In the Uk they are about £1500 a set. But some orthodontist charge less if u have both sets done at the same time. I don't know if u can choose. My orthodontist only did ceramic as there isn't any point in stocking both as they are nearly the same.
Sandra () - 26/Jul/2003 10:24:40 PM

Does the clear fixed braces treatment take longer then the fixed metal treatment?
Rika () - 27/Jul/2003 5:59:24 AM

my ortho said that the clear takes a couple od months longer but not that much
Em () - 27/Jul/2003 9:41:42 AM

No they don't take longer. I would of had to have my braces for a year with metal and I am having them for a year with ceramic so there isn't any difference. Just how they look and u have 2 take a bit more time cleaning as so not 2 miss any bits because u can't see the plaque building up.
Zoe () - 30/Jul/2003 10:08:51 PM

I just got the little O shapped elastics between my teeth to space em out 4 the seperaters, does it hurt much more when u get the metal ones in? my teeth just ache a bit now
Rika () - 30/Jul/2003 11:53:59 PM

people told me that the metal ones do hurt more. I personally can't tel you whether they do or don't because i didnt have to get bands on my back teeth...i got brackets
stephy () - 03/Aug/2003 9:46:27 PM

hey zoe don't be affraid they don't hurt at all... well at least they didn't hurt for me. well i hope that helped! buhbye
Petamore () - 12/Aug/2003 3:08:35 PM

Hi Zoe, my dentist said having the separators on are the WORST part of the braces thingie. So if you are ok with the seperators, you'll be fine for the next 2 years. BTW, has anyone had their braces tightened every ten days? I had a friend who had hers tightened this way.
Zoe () - 15/Aug/2003 6:55:47 PM

Hehe they didnt hurt! =o)I'm having 4 teeth out on tuesday im sacred of that! then im getting my braces on the 5th september so not long now!
Carol (craines@fauske.com) - 19/Aug/2003 8:42:02 PM

My daughter found out today she will need braces. She is interested in the clear ones. What makes these more difficult to clean? Are there any other disadvantages to the clear braces over other types?
() - 20/Aug/2003 10:21:59 PM

clear braces are difficult to clean because they stain very easily, so if i were you i would go with the metal ones because they are less expensive AND they aren't as noticable as you are probably thinking. i know because i have a whole lot of metal in my mouth and the day after i got them i went up to my best friend and she didn't even notice. so i would personally prefer the metal braces because they are generally better plus the clear ones make your mouth look HUGE and that would cause more attention then the metal braces.
Zoe () - 22/Aug/2003 5:22:55 PM

I have had the 4 teeth out now! It didnt hurt because I had a sedetive before hand and I went really giggly and didnt knwo what was going on! It hurt a bit the day after and I still cant it really hard food but it was nto as bad as I expected. 2 weeks till I get braces I'm excited!
vicky (-) - 30/Aug/2003 6:35:12 PM

are these avalible in the uk?? and are they at a price??
Layla () - 01/Sep/2003 6:09:02 PM

Ive just had my braces put on and im not sure that my dentist has put them on properly as I can see the metal band sticking out over my tooth and can feel it everytime I bite, is this normal or should I go back to see him about this???
Z.A. () - 03/Sep/2003 3:38:14 AM

Hi. I'm about to turn 16 and my orthodontist says that I need braces. I want something that won't be too visible, such as clear fixed braces. However, I've heard that it takes longer to fix teeth with clear braces rather than the metal kind. Is this tru?
meg () - 04/Sep/2003 9:49:16 PM

hi i'm 14 and im gettting braces put on pretty soon, but i havn't yet decided wether i want the clear ones or the metal ones. the clear ones are more expensive at my orthodentist and i want wether it worth it, thanks ;)
Zoe () - 06/Sep/2003 11:42:51 AM

I got braces yesterday and it took ages to put them on top and bottom! I got pink bands they look really cool! It hurt a bit yesterday but now it doesnt at all. I can feel them on the top a bit but not the bottom. I cant eat very hurt stuff yet though!
stephy () - 07/Sep/2003 12:24:33 AM

these are soooo cool! i wonder why my ortho didn't offer these to me! there is the fact that i was young and so my mom probably took the decision but... they are soooo cool!!!!
erin () - 07/Sep/2003 7:18:01 PM

i might be getting braces, what all do they do before they put them on?im scared...please tell me how it feels
Zoe () - 08/Sep/2003 7:11:54 PM

It feels weird at first cuz it feels like ur lips r kinda sticking out! I got used to em on the bottom after about a day but the top ones r starting 2 feel normal now, its been 3 days since i got them. It's funyn when other ppl say oh u got braces i kinda 4get i have em on!
