Removeable Retainers
Retainers are worn when main treatment is finished to let the teeth settle into their correct positions. You remove this appliance to clean it and (sometimes) to eat. Depending on your treatment you may have top and/or bottom retainers. The retainers shown here are called Hawley retainers. The bottom photo shows top and bottom Hawley retainers. This message can be seen by all visitors to this site.

Are they less expensive than braces? () - 23/Dec/2002 1:22:12 AM My orthodontist glued a wire on the backside of my top and bottom teeth. This is a permanent wire and will never be removed! I have to wear it forever! For the first 6 months they left the brackets toward the back of my mouth on. Then I had to attach a rubberband from one bracket to the other accross the front of my teeth. It looks like I have yellow teeth and feels weird!. I hate it. Does anyone else have this? Stephanie () - 24/Dec/2002 8:25:12 PM i have a reply for (anime_jrm) i have invisalign *which i hate* my bottom retainer broke in half, my dentist replaced it for free, to be nice :) but it would of cost us just $100! Smily () - 02/Jan/2003 3:34:32 AM I'm soon getting my braces off and I have to get a retainer. I used to have an expander, and it caused headaches from the pressure, it got to a point where I would have to stop wearing it to get braces. If I had worn the expander I would not have needed braces, (which sucks) cause it is taking way too long. but I was wondering if a retainer is going to cause that much pressure. thank you () - 02/Jan/2003 9:28:09 AM I would like to know the price range of the retainers. I have a gap in the middle of my top big teeth. they also go over my bottom teeth just a little bit if u look really close to my bottom teeth u will see the they are just a tad bit crooked but they don't really show as much as the other things. Do u think I need the bottom retainer just as well as the top one? Please respond back Sincerely, BeBe Summer () - 02/Jan/2003 7:47:13 PM hi all i just got my bottom retanier today and it hirts like hell and i am having trouble taliking in it is that normal:) Stephanie () - 10/Jan/2003 9:56:15 PM Reply to Summer! Will I be able to eat at all once the treatmenmt is finished REPLY TO SMLY () - 22/Jan/2003 3:27:23 PM The retainers cause less pressure than the fixed braces. Mine is hurting a bit now at first but the ortho says it will go away after a few days Ela (ela90@mail.ev1.net) - 02/Feb/2003 7:36:40 PM how long do u have to wear a retainer??? Is this true? Rainier R () - 21/Feb/2003 6:46:29 AM The going rate for the invisable ratainer is about $150 dollars just for one! Pretty darn expensive. So next time when your wearing retainer during the day and want to grab a bite to eat at somewhere dont put your retainer in your napkin your going to throw it away and u lose your retainer. Not that it happened to me I heard many stories about it. I just bought one just so I dont have to go to the ortho for long time plus I moved outer state... After that I only have to wear them at night for 3 months. chan (chanlodey@hotmail.com) - 21/Mar/2003 4:51:26 AM i've had my braces for 1 year and 3 months. it is now time for them to come off and now i have to wear a retainer. truthfully, are retainers necessary? i only had an open-bite. () - 21/Mar/2003 12:56:17 PM I think retainers are neccesary because if u don't wear them then your teeth will go back to the position they used to be in and then u will have to wear braces all over again. Severed () - 23/Mar/2003 12:33:21 AM Yup, and that's EXACTLY what happened to me. No matter how annoying retainers might seem, they're worth the little annoyance. I think that having braces again will be the bigger annoyance. At least for me anyway :/ The Londonator () - 26/Mar/2003 6:37:45 PM Hear me now, Respect to all the people out there wiv retainers, i av come to say keep it real and don't be afraid of others. but i do have to say dat the prices are well shabby. i mean i av been reading some of the e-mails and £50-500 is way too expensive for more of my crap info check out some of the other main tittles. Keep it real jobu () - 29/Mar/2003 9:28:00 PM I had a removeable retainer to close the gap in my front two teeth, my gap wasnt that big and the retainer closed the gap in less than 2 months, however when i started only wearing it at night the gap opened up again slightly, so u have to wear it all the time, i also got bonding done to help close it Ana () - 06/Apr/2003 12:27:50 AM yello Im getting a removable retainer after i get my braces wich i will wear for 2 and 12 years for two fused eye teeth and gum surgery. Stephanie () - 15/Apr/2003 3:28:03 AM Reply to braces2be, I got my braces on over 4 years ago, I can still remember how it felt. My opinion was that it hurt very little. Chiclett () - 31/Jul/2003 4:43:42 PM Hi! I really need advice! I have the Hawley retainers for top and bottom. I broke my bottom ones before and had to pay $50 for repair. Sadly, it broke again...and I don't want to have it repaired for $50 again! Only the left molars part of the bottom retainer broke. I was wondering if it'd be ok to put it together with krazy glue...any suggestions? Also, is it normal for retainers to be tight at first, but turn loose in 3 mos.? I'd really appreciate it if someone replied before Sept. 13, 2003. Thanks! kristi () - 31/Jul/2003 7:09:27 PM Don't try to replace it by your self!!!! that would only make it worse! i would pay the $50 and get a new one cuz it would be worth it. it is also normal for a retainer to be tight at first, but not for that long.
